Christmas aromas give off a magical scent. Marzipan, baked apple and spekulatius get you in the mood for reflective holidays, while more and more candles light up on your Advent wreath.

Fruit tea: is it worth drinking? The healthiest fruit teas

Fruit tea is tasty and perfectly quenches thirst - that's why it's hard to find someone who would not drink it at least once in their life. Many people drink it regularly, replacing other drinks with it. The choice of fruit teas is huge - but is fruit tea still tea? What types of fruit teas are there and which fruit tea should you choose to be sure that it is not only tasty but also healthy?

Fruit tea is not tea in the literal sense of the word. Classic, good-quality fruit teas do not contain tea leaves, but only dried fruit or dried fruit pieces.

This is what distinguishes them from flavored black tea, which is dominated by tea leaves and has no - or very few - dried fruit additives.

Fruit teas are available in various forms. They are most often found in bags or loose - the latter are available primarily in tea houses and tea shops.

In grocery stores, you can also often find fruit teas in the form of instant, i.e. granules that completely dissolve under the influence of warm water. The name is misleading: it is not a tea, but a drink with a specific flavor.

Types of fruit teas

There are many types of fruit teas in stores - most of them are compositions of various fruits, giving, depending on the proportion of ingredients used, very interesting flavor effects.

The most popular of the classic fruit teas in Ireland are chokeberry tea, raspberry tea, hibiscus tea, rosehip tea, forest fruit tea (including strawberries, raspberries, blackberries), and cranberry tea.

Among the blends of fruit teas, mandarin-ginger teas, blackcurrant tea with lemon, as well as compositions in which hibiscus dominates, with dried cherries, raspberries, papaya, pineapple, mango, goji berries and apples are very tasty and popular.

What are the properties of fruit tea

Fruit tea does not contain caffeine, so unlike traditional tea, it does not have a stimulating effect. You can drink it warm - then it heats up, or cold - when cooled, it perfectly refreshes.

Fruit tea also has health benefits that depend on which type of dried fruit or dried fruit pieces dominate its composition. It can have anti-inflammatory and diaphoretic effects (e.g. raspberry tea), support the functioning of the urinary system, improve immunity and even lower cholesterol.

Which fruit teas are the healthiest?

Which fruit teas are worth drinking? Their selection is very large, and several of them deserve special attention:

Aronia tea - rich in vitamins (including vitamin B, vitamin C and vitamin E), rutin, calcium, iron, iodine. It supports the circulatory system, regulates blood pressure, and improves metabolism.

Cranberry tea - has an antibacterial effect, contains e.g. vit. C. It supports the functioning of the urinary system, it is worth drinking it in case of frequent urinary bladder infections, kidney diseases, and in the case of kidney stones.

Rosehip tea - rich in antioxidants (including tiliroside, which accelerates fat burning), also contains vitamin. C, polyphenols, vit. E, flavonoids. It improves immunity, promotes weight loss, and may help relieve pain from osteoarthritis, and some studies also suggest that it reduces the risk of type 2 diabetes.

Raspberry tea - good quality raspberry tea is a valuable source of organic acids, vitamins (including C, PP, B vitamins), and minerals (iron, calcium, potassium). It has anti-inflammatory, antipyretic and diaphoretic effects, it warms up perfectly in cold weather, and the antioxidants it contains can help lower blood pressure.

Hibiscus tea (Sudanese mallow flower) - is rich in, among others, in wit. C, minerals, and antioxidants that lower LDL cholesterol - one of them is delifinidin, which can help you control weight. Hibiscus tea has anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties, helps soothe coughs, and speeds up recovery after illness.

Which fruit tea should you choose?

When choosing fruit tea, consider both its properties and composition - both are equally important.

Since fruit tea has the properties of the fruit it was made from, the first thing you should check is what is in its composition - whether it is dried aronia, raspberry, rose, hibiscus, or a mixture of these fruits (and in what proportions).

It is also worth remembering that good-quality fruit tea should contain, above all, dried leaves or fruit - and they must be in the first or first positions in the composition.

Some fruit teas are additionally enriched with vitamin. C that is lost in the production process. Good fruit tea, however, cannot contain flavor enhancers, ingredients that improve its aroma or dyes, acidity regulators, sweeteners or sugar.

How to brew fruit tea?

In order for the fruit tea to retain the taste and properties of the fruit from which it was made, it must be brewed in the right way. Do not pour boiling water over the dry - pour a teaspoon of tea into a cup or mug (or put the same amount in a special infuser), then pour it with water at a temperature not higher than 90-95 degrees C.

The brewing time is usually about 7-10 minutes, although in the case of some mixtures, especially those from specialist stores, containing exotic fruit, it may be slightly different (and it is worth making sure about this after purchasing it).

After this time, it is worth removing the fruit or drying it, because if it is brewed for too long, it can make the tea too bitter or sour. Contrary to other types of teas (e.g. green), these fruit teas should not be brewed again: they must be disposed of immediately after brewing.
