Oregano - properties and application

Oregano is the popular name for the common marjoram (Origanum vulgare L.). Although we associate this plant mainly with a kitchen spice, it also has health-promoting properties for our body that are worth getting to know. The herbal raw material is the herb oregano (Origani Herba).

Basic chemicals in oregano

Oregano herb contains up to 1.2% of an essential oil of quite variable composition, which is rich in phenols: carvacol and thymol. Their number can reach 40%. In addition, the oil contains geranyl acetate and sesquiterpenes (in a small amount). Oregano herb also contains tannins (about 4%). In addition, its composition includes flavonoids, which include:

  • luteolin, diosmetin and apigenin derivatives,
  • phytosterols,
  • resin compounds,
  • mustard substances,
  • minerals.

How does oregano work?

The herb oregano slightly stimulates the secretory functions of the organs. It increases the secretion of saliva, gastric juice and bile, improving the processes of assimilation and digestion of food. It also increases the secretion of mucus, especially through the mucous membranes of the upper respiratory tract, and regulates the functions of the sweat glands and kidneys, gently increasing the amount of urine excreted. Due to the content of flavonoids, this plant has a relaxing effect on:

  • bronchial smooth muscles,
  • smooth muscles of the intestines,
  • biliary tract,
  • ureters,
  • uterus during menstrual bleeding.

Oregano is considered to be an effective carminative agent. The presence of tannins and phenols makes oregano:

  • has anti-diarrheal properties,
  • has bactericidal properties,
  • binds harmful waste products.

Oregano - side effects

When using the herb oregano in the recommended doses, no side effects are observed.

Oregano - application

For therapeutic purposes, the upper, densely leafed parts of flowering shoots of the common marjoram are used. They are dried in natural conditions in a dark and dry place or in a food dryer at the temperature up to 35⁰C. The herb used in medicine is harvested from June to September.

Marigold herb is used in various types of diseases, most often as a mild diuretic. It is also used:

  • in hypofunction of the liver and biliary tract,
  • in catarrhal conditions of the stomach,
  • in dyspepsia and intestinal atony,
  • when there is excessive fermentation (gases) in the body,
  • with flatulence.

We also use oregano to treat catarrh of the upper respiratory tract, cough and when breathing is difficult.

As for external use, the herb may be used:

  • to create rinses supporting the treatment of oropharyngitis,
  • as an addition to baths used in the case of itchy skin and in the treatment of difficult-to-heal wounds
  • as well as for washing patients lying down.

An interesting fact is that in folk medicine, oregano was considered an effective sedative in the treatment of some mental disorders - hysteria and erotomania.

Oregano oil - application

  • It is worth mentioning oregano oil, which, thanks to the carvacrol content:
  • kills bacteria, viruses and fungi,
  • strengthens the immune system in transition periods, when the likelihood of catching a cold, flu or sinusitis increases,
  • has anti-inflammatory, analgesic and hepatoprotective properties (protects the liver).

According to some scientists, the content of biologically active antioxidants in oregano is a better source of antioxidants than blueberries or grains. The antioxidants contained in the oil eliminate the excess of free radicals. The phenols found in oregano kill bacteria and viruses by destroying their membranes and cell walls, without destroying the cells of the human body.

Oregano oil comes in several varieties. They differ in the active substance, which may be:

  • carvacrol,
  • sabinen,
  • linalool
  • p-cymen,
  • thymol.

Due to different physicochemical parameters, they show different properties.

Do it yourself - oregano as a remedy for ailments
An infusion of marigold herb

Pour 2 tablespoons of wild oregano into 2 cups of boiling water, brew covered for about 15 minutes, then let it cool for 10 minutes and strain. Drink ½ cup 2-3 times a day:

  • 30 minutes before a meal as a gastric and antispasmodic drug,
  • after a meal as a carminative and expectorant drug.

The cooled down infusion can also be used for rinsing the mouth and throat.

Bile herbs

Mix 50 g of maroon herb with the same amount of Mugworts herb and Roman chamomile or chamomile flowers. Add 25 g of shanties herb, goldenrod herb, knotweed herb and elderberry fruit. Mix.

Pour 1½ tablespoon of herbs into 2 cups of boiling water. Brew for about 60 minutes (e.g. in a thermo jug). Drink 2/3 cups in the morning on an empty stomach and in the evening before going to bed. The infusion has a choleretic effect in the case of hepatic insufficiency.

Herbs for bathing and washing the body

Mix 2 handfuls of oregano herb, knotweed herb and dandelion herb. Pour it all over with 3 liters of cold water. Heat until boiling, then simmer, covered, over gentle heat for 5-10 minutes. Filter the whole thing. Such a mixture can be used as an addition to bathing or washing the body of seriously ill (lying) people, because it has an effect that prevents the formation of pressure ulcers to some extent.

Oregano has many uses. It can be used both as a spice and a plant with health-promoting properties. In medicine, the oil of oregano and the dried herb of the common marjoram are used.
